Reconnecting with Forest Bathing
Last week, I co-hosted a workshop on the topic of “Forest Bathing.” Forest Bathing has gotten a lot of attention as the latest wellness trend, which is no surprise when you consider its numerous health-related benefits. Forest Bathing has been proven to lower heart rate and blood pressure, accelerate recovery from illness, decrease inflammation, and even improve happiness. Sign me up!
The best part is, Forest Bathing doesn’t require you to do much of anything, other than to find a beautiful spot outside of your choosing that provides peace and solitude. Once you’ve selected your spot (and left your device at home!), you’ll let your body be your guide. Ask yourself, "What feels good?" Would you like to sit in stillness for a while, lie in the grass, dip your toes in a pond, or perhaps wander around aimlessly with no real destination in mind?
The next, and perhaps most important, step is to unlock the power of the forest with all five senses. Feel the warmth of the sun on your face as you listen to the birds in the trees. Smell, and even taste, the fresh air. Admire the beauty that is all around you as you “bathe,” or immerse, yourself in nature. Give yourself permission to soak it all in; relax, unwind, and enjoy.
When I was really struggling to overcome depression and anxiety, I spent a lot of time outdoors. I had no real plan in mind; I just knew that I needed to disconnect and get away from it all. Little did I know that I was Forest Bathing! The simple act of reconnecting with nature profoundly improved my health and well-being in many ways. I am forever grateful for this sacred practice!
Now that “Spring has (finally) sprung,” I hope that you attempt to Forest Bathe, or at least spend more of your time outdoors. Please feel free to reach out to me and share your favorite outdoor activity or let me know if you have any questions about Forest Bathing. I’m here for you!
